Elfhelm
Elfhelm — also known as Skellig — is a mysterious island lost in the heart of the ocean, the last refuge of ancient magic and land of the elves in the world of Berserk. It is the final goal of the long journey of Guts and his companions after the Eclipse: only the magic of the elves can restore to Casca the sanity she lost during the sacrifice ceremony.
Flora, the woodland witch who guided Schierke, mentions Elfhelm as the only place in the world able to accomplish what surpasses the capacities of ordinary magic. The island is protected by ancient magic that makes it practically inaccessible to those not guided there — a natural protection against the dark forces that rule the rest of the world.
Danan — The Great Mother
Danan, the elven Great Mother, is the sovereign of Elfhelm. Her exact nature is mysterious — she seems to transcend the mere category of "elf" and to possess magic of incomparable power. Her relationship to the world of Berserk and to causality is not fully understood even by the island's other inhabitants.
It is she who oversees Casca's healing ritual — a deep dive into the warrior's broken soul to rebuild the fragments scattered by the trauma of the Eclipse. The ritual is performed by Schierke and Farnese, who dive in a trance into Casca's psyche, guided by Danan.
Casca's healing at Elfhelm is one of the most important and moving moments in all of Berserk. It is the goal for which Guts endured years of suffering. And when Casca regains her sanity, she also regains her memories — including the Eclipse in all its horror.
Elfhelm and Guts's group
After a long sea voyage strewn with perils — mermaids, pirates, storms and creatures of darkness — Guts's group finally reaches the island. Puck rediscovers his native land. The atmosphere there is radically different from the rest of the world: bright, light, almost unreal after years of darkness.
Schierke and Farnese dive into Casca's soul under Danan's supervision. They cross symbolic mental landscapes representing Casca's traumas, reconstituting her personality fragment by fragment. Casca's inner arc is among the most beautiful and painful in the whole manga.
Casca recovers her memories and consciousness — including the memories of the Eclipse. The moment she reunites with Guts is one of the most anticipated scenes in all of Berserk. But the complexity of their reunion — love and trauma inseparable — is handled with poignant nuance.
The group leaves Elfhelm to return to the world transformed by the World Merge. The journey toward a final confrontation with Griffith resumes — with a healed but fragile Casca, and a group bonded by years of shared trials.
Elfhelm after the World Merge
When Guts and his companions leave Elfhelm after Casca's healing, they discover the world has radically changed. The World Merge triggered by Griffith transformed even the geography of the surface — and Elfhelm itself is no longer quite the same isolated island it was.
The magic that protected the island from the influence of the world of darkness is tested by a world where the boundaries between dimensions have melted. The fate of Elfhelm and Danan in this new world is one of the open questions of the ongoing arc — Miura having died before he could conclude the story.
