Kentaro Miura

Author of Berserk · 1966–2021

Kentaro Miura is a Japanese artist and writer universally recognized as one of the greatest artists of his medium. Born on July 11, 1966 in Chiba, he devoted most of his creative life to a single work: Berserk, a dark fantasy saga published from 1989 until his death in 2021.

A prodigy artist, he created his first manga at the age of 10. After art studies and several collaborations, he launched Berserk in Animal House magazine in 1989. The series took off in 1991 with the Golden Age arc, before moving to Young Animal magazine in 1992, where it would run until the end.

Having died on May 6, 2021 of an acute aortic dissection at the age of 54, Miura did not complete his work. His death caused worldwide mourning. Since 2022, his friend Kouji Mori and Studio Gaga have continued the manga in keeping with his vision.

Art style & Influences

Artwork of exceptional density

Miura's art style stands out for a density and level of detail extremely rare in manga. His battle pages are works of a complexity close to medieval engraving — some double-page spreads represented weeks of solitary work. Gothic architecture, medieval armor, demonic creatures: each element is drawn with an encyclopedic precision that commands respect.

His stated influences include the works of Go Nagai (Devilman, Mazinger Z), Western fantasy literature, the film Conan the Barbarian (1982), and video games — notably the early Japanese RPGs that accompanied his youth.

Narrative depth & philosophical themes

Beyond the action, Berserk explores major philosophical themes: free will versus destiny, the price of ambition, the nature of friendship and betrayal, the resilience of the human soul in the face of horror. Miura draws on existentialism as much as on the medieval epic to build his narrative.

He is renowned for his nuanced portrayal of characters: neither perfect heroes nor purely evil villains. Griffith, the main antagonist, remains one of the most fascinating and debated characters in world manga — at once brilliant, magnetic and monstrous.

Legacy & Global influence

Berserk's influence on global popular culture is immense. The video game Dark Souls (FromSoftware) explicitly owes it its atmosphere, its aesthetic and several iconic creatures — Guts directly inspired the Abyss Watchers and the design of many bosses. Franchises like Dragon's Dogma, Final Fantasy XVI, Monster Hunter and Elden Ring bear the mark of this influence.

In the manga world, Berserk shaped generations of authors. Hajime Isayama (Attack on Titan), Makoto Yukimura (Vinland Saga), Inio Asano and many others cite Miura as a decisive influence on their approach to art and storytelling.

In 2021, Miura's death prompted tributes of a scale rarely seen for a mangaka. Thousands of artists worldwide published drawings in his memory. Young Animal's official page received hundreds of thousands of messages. Berserk remains one of the best-selling manga in the world, with over 60 million volumes sold.
